Bring Me Your World

Dear Crew,

I used to think that friendship meant, above all, spending a lot of time together. Having coffee. Going for walks. Keeping each other up to date.

That's all well and good. Today I realize that I'm looking for something else. Not more time. But more worlds.

Many years ago, I met a Spanish friend. At first, she lived in Munich. Later, she moved back to Barcelona. At some point, she invited me and a friend to the Sónar Festival, and we visited her there quite often.

She didn't just invite us to the festival. She invited us into her life.

We got to know her closest friends—people from all over Spain. We didn't speak Spanish perfectly and were a little shyer than the rest. And yet that was never an issue. We just fit right in.

She didn't just invite us. She opened up her world to us.

Over the past few days, I've realized that this is exactly what I'm looking for in friendships. Not people who get lost in my world. Not people who agree with me on everything.

But rather, people with a world of their own. A language of their own. A passion of their own. A crew of their own.

Maybe that's why my boyfriend has always been part of my crew. Not because he's just like me, but because he brings something to the table that I don't have.

He collects the most beautiful cookbooks in the world. And he cooks dishes from them that I’ve never even heard of before. He plays music. And he takes care of his record collection. He even has a record cleaner. And secretly, he dreams of a small bar that’s only open on very specific days. Just like the Spaceship.

Maybe that's the most beautiful form of hospitality of all. Not inviting someone over, but saying, "Come on. I'll show you my world." And then asking, "Now tell me about yours."

That's why I dream of a world full of people who have the courage to cultivate their own world— and to open doors .

Not so that everyone can live there, but so that we can visit each other.

I believe that's exactly where community begins for me. Not in merging. But in genuine encounter .

With love and a little jet engine,
Jeannette
